Helping Seniors Survive the Cognitive and Physical Changes of COVID-19

DATE: Thursday, November 19

COURSE DESCRIPTION

COVID-19 has not only disrupted virtually every aspect of American life and business, but its lingering effects are only now being recognized. Since the pandemic first emerged, senior and long-term care have valiantly battled to protect their residents, staff, and the broader community. With surges in infection and a vaccine still unavailable, the focus needs to turn to the emotional, cognitive, and physical needs of those residents.

Explore these issues and concerns from the multidisciplinary perspective of a geriatrician, dietitian, and activity specialist. While no one person or specialty has all the answers, together we can have a big impact. Brainstorm and participate in a dynamic discussion of ideas and options to help guide residents through this ongoing crisis.

AT THE END OF THIS PRESENTATION YOU WILL BE ABLE TO:

  • Better understand how COVID-19 attacks the nervous system resulting in cognitive, behavioral, and psychological problems.

  • Manage post-COVID-19 effects on residents with a comprehensive, holistic perspective including medical, dietary, and activity.

  • Apply new ideas and options to help guide residents through the pandemic.

After four years as Program Director at Springfield Supportive Living, Rose was faced with a new challenge of developing creative programs and activities in the midst of COVID-19. While it has been a roller coaster for every community, Rose and her team got creative, testing ideas to determine what works the best for their community on a daily basis. Since graduating from Lincoln College in 2007 with a liberal arts degree, Rose has applied those skills in senior living. In her own words, “We are constantly having a good time no matter what the world is bringing upon us!”
