Wounds, Weight & Hydration; Fighting the War with Nutrition in LTC
DATE: Thursday, December 15, 2022
Noon – 1 p.m. CST
COURSE DESCRIPTION
For years, there has been a war going on in long-term care combatting the all-too-common malnutrition that can plague our elderly residents. The implications are many but at the top of the list are the Big Three – wounds, weight, and hydration.
Research in long-term care has shown that residents who lose weight unintentionally or are not well hydrated do not heal wounds as efficiently and are at higher risk of developing wounds. It has also been well established that unintentional weight loss can lead to malnutrition, which places the resident at risk for a multitude of adverse outcomes including increased infections, falls, or declines in cognition.
This webinar will review the common risk factors that contribute to the development of undernutrition or malnutrition, as well as how to combat them with assessments and interventions. The components of determining nutritional status, risk factors to consider preventing the Big Three, and effective nutritional strategies to fight this war on malnutrition will also be explored.
