On-Demand, Self-Study CE WEBINARS

Pain Management in Older Adults

DATE: Friday, July 10th

COURSE DESCRIPTION

An estimated 50% of older adults living at home and up to 80% of those living in nursing homes have significant pain that is often persistent. There are many challenges that can make it difficult to treat pain in this age group, most notably the presence of other significant health problems and the difficulty of assessing pain in those with cognitive impairment. This session will review different pain types and discuss the misconceptions and consequences of untreated pain in the elderly. Analgesic therapies are examined and the current Illinois laws and regulations, and considerations for use of Cannabis are presented.

AT THE END OF THIS PRESENTATION YOU WILL BE ABLE TO:

  • Develop an awareness for misconceptions and consequences of untreated pain while recognizing different pain types

  • Examine appropriate dose, duration, and risk for adverse effects with analgesic therapies

  • Describe the current laws for medical cannabis in Illinois, cannabis formulations currently available, evidence for using medical cannabis for various pain indications, and potential adverse effects from therapy
