Rebuilding Census After COVID-19

Building and maintaining census/occupancy has been a leading priority for senior care providers for some time. The COVID-19 pandemic has made the concern even more urgent. In fact, a recent McKnight’s poll revealed that a full 82% of surveyed executives listed maintaining census as a top challenge. Nursing home occupancy is down 15% since the end of 2019. Senior living is not faring much better – down to 80.2% occupancy by the end of 2020. A recent consumer poll, however, suggests that the way forward may not be as bleak as some feared.

While there is an end to the pandemic in sight, providers cannot simply “wait it out” and expect pent up demand to correct their bottom line. What strategies can be adopted NOW to boost admissions and move-ins…and how can providers position themselves now for a post-pandemic, “next normal”?

CC is the driving force behind Quantum Age, a consultancy serving organizations in senior care and aging services. She is among the top strategists in the field, specializing in strategic planning, positioning and branding, and leadership development for the long-term/post-acute care and aging services sectors. CC serves on advisory groups for several organizations, including the Society for the Advancement of Gerontological Environments (SAGE) and Environments for Aging, and is vice chair of the Advancing Excellence in Long Term Care Collaborative (AELTCC). She holds a Master’s degree in the Management of Aging Services from the UMBC School of Aging and a Bachelor’s degree in Communication and Economics from Oberlin College.

Instructor Bio: Lisa Thomson – Chief Strategy and Marketing Officer, Pathway Health

Lisa provides insight to Pathway Health while working closely with industry leaders, providers and professional associations identifying health care initiatives, regulatory changes and challenges affecting the post-acute care market. Lisa continues to provide education to providers and professional associations across the nation focusing on complex health care initiatives and leadership strategies for implementation.
